Callahan’s  Beach House – THEN & NOW

2 Walker St, Norfolk, ON N0A 1N0
Callahan’s Beach House construction began in the fall of 1984 being built through the course of winter. Even with the periodic warm breeze coming off to lake, being right on the lakefront with scattering frigid temperatures, this was one cold winter project.

This building was built on steel piles that went down to bedrock. Once the piles were in and ready to be cut to height, there was extra length so it was decided to raise the building by one foot higher than originally designed.

Details of the project include; wood frame construction on steel foundation, board and batten wood siding, flat roof and metal covered canopy above the outside patio.

The dining was designed in the front of the building, which is facing the lake for patrons to observe the gorgeous view with stunning lake sunsets. The kitchen was designed to be at the back, offices and storage upstairs. Outside patio is supported on recycled telephone poles.

THEN – This image of Callahan’s Beach House was taken on the grand opening day, which was on Mother’s Day in 1984. It was a very lucky decision to raise the building a foot higher or the water would have been above the floor level and flooded the restaurant.
